Appreciate the journey

“It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.” — Ursula K. Le Guin

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” — Lao Tzu

Appreciate the journey. We all live different lives, shaped by different internal and external twists and turns.

Your life is the journey. It’s not the gold medal, the million dollar contract, or the CEO title. Reaching the finish line isn’t what defines you or brings you deep fulfillment. The real pain and pleasure happen along the way, and we often need the struggle to truly appreciate the growth.

Think about it. If someone just handed you the reward you were chasing, the feeling would be shallow. It can’t compare to the version of your life where you worked for it, had skin in the game, and gave everything you had.

People also tend to focus too much on how things end. They forget the growth that came before. We usually don’t know how things will unfold, but we can still lean into the here and now. Even if the outcome isn’t what you hoped for, you can still walk away with something meaningful. I don’t know my ending, but despite all the ups and downs, I can say without a doubt that my journey has been a great one thanks to the three of you.

Don’t just focus on your goals and whether you reach them. The early mornings, late nights, and boring practices. The losing, the failing, and the shared tears and laughs. Breaking through your limits to find new ones. Every single one of these moments matters. Each drop fills your life bucket and builds the masterpiece that is you.

Your journey is your life. As T.S. Eliot wrote:

“And the end of all our exploring

Will be to arrive where we started

And know the place for the first time.”
